Other than the later went on to say they have a chain timing belt but appear to have some other form of belt in oil which is a little odd... normally "wet belt" refers to the timing belt - so there may be the case of some crossed wires here.Okell said:
If the OP has an email trail showing that the question was asked and the trader gave a wrong and misleading answer then it seems pretty clear cut to me. (Assuming he also has evidence that the car did have a wet belt)
Then the goods do not match the description, repair/replace is impossible so reject, expect some deduction for actual use (and a fight from the dealership).Mistymo01 said:I have emails from them saying this car doesn't have a wet belt, yet I have one in my car.3 -

Ah, so you have one of those diesels which Stellantis fitted to some Astras in 2020 with both timing chain and also a separate wet oil pump drive belt ?
Apologies to both you and @Aylesbury_Duck. That belt is indeed in the sump.
You confused me and you probably confused the poor car salesman as well. Cars have thousands of components; belts, chains, cables, pulleys, levers, etc. When people talk about chain drive, wet belt or dry belt, they are almost always referring to how the camshaft is driven, particularly when discussing those notorious Stellantis Puretech and similar engines.
Vauxhall's spec probably does say 'timing chain'. What very precisely do you have in writing from the car salesman when you asked? That detail is really important to your claim.2 -
No need to apologise, I had assumed OP meant the cambelt, as you rightly point out, most people would assume the same.Alderbank said:

I agree that this new information makes an already tricky situation more tricky for the OP. I think it a reasonable assumption that the seller responded honestly to OP's question, but without knowing exactly what question was asked and exactly how it was answered, we're all guessing somewhat.0 -
TBH. No dealer is going to payout on a new engine after 1 year. At best would be a refund less usage.Life in the slow lane0
