Cancelled Car insurance took money for 2 months and refuse to give it back.

Hi.
EDIT:
Sorry, A HUGE mistake in my wording lol
When I say cancelled I don't mean I cannceled midterm I mean i stopped it from renewing. They sent me a new quote and it was 40% more than last years so i ended it BEFORE it renewed. I ended it/cancelled two weeks before it was to be renewed. It ended when It was supposed to end. bare this in mind when you read the question.
I cancelled my car insurance in July (have the email & account info to prove it) yet my old car insurance took two months (£55 each). I stupidly didn't notice due to looking after my wife who has been in and out of hospital due to major surgery with complications and only noticed after the second payment. I have contacted them by phone and E-mail and have said they will not refund the money.
I asked to speak to a supervisor and they said they'd get them to ring me later.. Which they haven't (that was a week ago) I called up today and said they can't issue a refund as I was covered. When I point out I got an email saying my insurance was cancelled and my account said the cover finished on July 28th 2025 they just said they can't issue refunds.
Is there anything I can do? I cancelled the DD after i noticed the second payment etc.

Speak to your bank and do a direct debit indemnity claim, if you have cast iron proof you have an email that says the cover was cancelled (and also proof you were covered elsewhere for that time period)0

You are aware that you took out a loan to pay for the insurance. As such cancelling ins can mean that you still owe them for the loan & interest you took out.

When was the first DD taken relative to the cancellation? DD is almost a week long process, if you cancelled just before the DD was due then it would have been too late to stop its collection however they should have factored that into the amount that you still owe them for early termination.0 -

When did the policy commence, and when was the policy scheduled to end? 12 months later?
Did you elect to pay by monthly instalments?

So much basic information missing from the OP - like when did the policy start; how long after that did he cancel; how was he paying; what do the T&Cs of the policy say about cancellation etc; what exactly did the insurance co say when they told him they could not refund?1

On the basis you have evidence that they accepted instruction not to renew the policy the simplest solution would be to contract your bank and make a claim under the DD Guarantee for the two payments that were taken without authorisation. Make it clear that the policy was due to lapse, that you have evidence of this, but that they have taken payments for the new policy anyway.
I wish my insurance was such that after a 40% increase premiums were only £55/month!0 -
