Just for clarity:
The earnings limit is only for Carers Allowance. There is no earning limit for the carer element of UC, which is presumably what he would be claiming.
[He could claim both and get class 1 NI credits from the CA as well as class 3 from UC, but the CA will be deducted in full from the UC so financially he wouldn't be any better off in the short or medium term.]0 -
It's up to your son, but if he only claims Carer's Allowance (CA) he will get £83.30 per week. If he also claims Universal Credit (UC), his total weekly income will be £119.60 per week, an additional £36.30 per week. Carer's Allowance can be paid weekly. It can also be claimed online https://www.gov.uk/carers-allowance/how-to-claimCurrent waiting time for first payment has been in the region of two to three months, according to some posts in this forum.Your son can claim both CA and Universal Credit. If he chooses to do this, and decides to be paid CA weekly, he will receive £83.30 CA per week, with a monthly top of UC of £157.69.1

OP's son is looking to work alongside caring, so wage deduction from UC is a factor to consider.
The work allowance doesn't apply to carers.
I can see why the approach to claim Carers Allowance only is favoured in this situation.0 -

he wants to also work and im keen for him to as i dont want him to get in a benefit trap iykwim, hes a good head on him and think him helping me and some work will be good short term but would be aiming for a good fulltime job its just not great out there at the moment for school leavers

Up to him, of course, it's just if he does forgo £150+/month while he's looking for work it needs to be a fully informed decision.
Edit: reading back now I see the thread moved quicker than me before, so I'd missed some posts. Caught up now!1 -

thanksThere is a Council Tax disregard for sixth form school leavers."school or college leavers still aged under 20 who have left school or college after 30 April. They will be disregarded until 1 November of the same year whether or not they take up employment"This is specifically mentioned on the Welsh government website but not the UK?England version. It is in many Councils' individual websites and on various advice websites but I can not post links as a newbie.I have joined this forum to see how widely Councils are systematically ignoring this discount and then overcharging households. I hope to raise it awareness of this issue.

I hope to raise it awareness of this issue. Thanks for highlighting this. It's an important disregard which seems to be little known and which is often overlooked by council benefit assessors. The discount / disregard is mentioned at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/wales/housing/council-tax/council-tax-w/ (see under the heading Discounts)It means that the original poster can contact the council and ask for the 25% single person discount to be reinstated until 31 October.0 -
Remember council tax discounts and council tax support are different. As you are in receipt of appropriate benefits apply for a one regard discount because your son is classed as a family carer. This is 25% same as a single person's discount. Basically a one regard discount is where two or more people over 18 are resident but some of residents are disregarded-or not counted in simple terms!- so from day before his 18th birthday your Sp discount will end. Then you should get one regard from this date until the 31st October because he is disregarded as a person under 20 in f/t education so only you are counted/regarded-h3nce its name. From 1st November he should then be disregarded as a family carer-type B. I.e.he provides care for an average of 35 hours a week and lives in same property as person he is caring for who gets appropriate benefit.
This means your liability will be 75%. And any entitlement to council tax support/reduction (this used to be called council tax benefit until 2013 but is widely still known as it) is calculated on 75% liability not 100%

back in august i notified them that my son had finished his a levels and fulltime education
before i was getting 100% council tax suppot but they said i would lose the 25% single part
they are now amending things though they did say it would take 13 weeks due to backlog
so now im a little confused, obviously my son has just put in a claim for CA only and will wait to inform council tax if he gets it but am concerned i will lose more council tax support
thanks for all the help0
