When I go through the link from the MSE email I have to complete a form as though I am a new BG customer and set up a new direct debit. If this deal is available to current BG customers why do I need to set up a new direct debit? And if I do complete a new direct debit form will my current credit with BG show on this new account?

I've just done this switch (as an existing BG customer) and also had to complete a new direct debit instruction. The reference number on the new mandate is different from that on the previous one. My existing British Gas account number remains unchanged, so I am confident the credit balance currently on the account is safe.1
