Airline ceased trading therefore flights cancelled

Hi
I have booked a trip to Iceland via Trip.com. I have been informed my flights have been cancelled from Iceland to Liverpool due to airline Play ceasing operation. Play was a icelandic company so i dont think will be covering in UK air rules
Through Trip.com they have said I am not entitled to a refund. I have went onto Play airlines website who have a message on to say if paid by card to contact card issuer.
I am wondering if this fails is there another way to claim the money back? I have had to pay again for another flight from Iceland to Liverpool as we had connecting flights from Liverpool to Tenerife, which has cost a further £400 to the £200 we orginally paid. According to Trip.com their policy doesnt cover to ensure a refund/alternative flights if the airline ceases operation.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Taking it that you paid on a debit card
Contact your card provider for a chargeback for non receipt of service.
Will be better if you can supply them with proof that they are no longer trading & that your flight is cancelled. Or you will have to wait till the day after flight before starting process.

You will not be able to claim the extra cost of the new flights.

If you can't reclaim through the card provider, you may be able to claim off your travel insurance.

If you have travel insurance check if it included SAFI (Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance)

May find it hard to do a chargeback because Trip.com are a middleman and fulfilled their end of the contract.

Did you book a package with Trip.com or just the flights?  If you booked a package (including hotel or car hire or tours etc) then you'll have more rights.

If you just booked the flights then you can try claiming from your credit/debit card.  This may not be straightforward as you didn't book directly with the airline, who charged your card? Play or Trip.com? It might matter.

Travel Insurance is another option but will depend on your policy.

EDIT: I've based this on UK legislation although re-reading your post I'm not sure if you are UK based or your journey was starting in the UK?
