Tenants energy bill now in my name

Hi,
My tenants were due to leave on in Jan 2025 and didn't and my tenancy agreement expired then.
Ovo have done a trace and search and are not asking me to pay £1k energy bill.
This feels very unfair and without a tenancy agreement they are saying they won't change it but I can't get a tenancy agreement as the tenants are not supposed to be there.
I have proof they are still paying rent which is great but they are saying they won't accept that.
Anyone know what I can do.
Thanks
Jo

The fact that the agreement expired is neither here nor there, surely the tenants have now rolled onto a periodic tenancy?

If they're still in occupation then the tenancy agreement has not expired.1

This must have meant the tenants have told OVO they were moving out in January, have they admitted they did this?0

As above, the fixed term may have expired but if they haven't moved out and are still paying rent then the tenancy carries on as a monthly periodic tenancy.
I would email OVO and explain that to them and tell them they need to take it up with the tenants.2
