Is it possible to unlock the Nokia E65 so that it can work on O2?
Is it possible to unlock the SE P990i so that it can work on O2?
Which is the better of the two for Tomtom 6 & also to use wi-fi?
Which is the newer model of the two?
Thank you0 -

The E65 was my favourite of all the Nokia phones. It's not really comparable to the P990i, though - they're both Symbian smartphones (although the E60 is Nokia S60 and the Sony is UIQ), but the P990i has a full (albeit small) QWERTY keyboard and a much larger screen. But this means that it's much much larger overall than the E65.
The E65 is a really nice phone, with the bonus of being able to use S60 software (like Nokia's Maps app, which I used to use all the time with a bluetooth GPS). The slide action was really nice and solid, too.
I still miss my E65 six months after I had to give it back.( When my contract with T-Mobile's finished in six months, I plan to hit them up for an E65 and then get either an Eee PC or a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. The phone and other device combined will replace my Windows Mobile phone.
I wouldn't buy an Orange-branded phone. Orange were notorious for fiddling with the software, and debranding it is risky and invalidates your Nokia warranty. Also, unlocking newer S60 handsets for use on other networks is annoying.
Oh, and the E65 is newer than the P990i, but that's a terrible reason to pick a phone - look at the specs and pick which one is best for what you need.0 -

Oops, missed this.
Last I checked, Skype for S60 was only available from Three on certain phones like the N73. Skype did a deal with them and it's not generally available.
Gizmo Project do have software which integrates in with the addressbook on S60 phones, but it totally messed up my E65 and I had to hard reset it to fix it. They might have improved it since then! You can configure the built-in VoIP client to work with Gizmo, though, and that worked just fine.
I'd always use Gizmo over Skype, as Gizmo use open standards and can be used on anything which supports the SIP VoIP standard. Skype is limited to just Skype's software.0 -

The Nokia is a May 2007 Unit the Sony is a 2006 phone.
Yes only Orange can do this the unlocking is explained in this thread.
You may also want to de-brand the phones as Orange put their silly software on the orginal software is better this is covered in this thread (and a parallel thread on the MSE Mobiles forum) for the SE990i . I think the Nokia can be de-branded best ask one the MSE Mobile forum.
Can't help with the Sat Nav, except to say for either phone you will need
1) A bluetooth Sat Nav reciver (from £20)
2) Some software like Tom Tom (I've no idea about this)
Orange Accessories have a Wayfinder unit for £19.99 inc P&P stock due this week. Play.com have the same unit with software, but with no mains charger for £23ish inc P&P. It would be prudent to check that the free wayfinder software (the play.com package includes a 12 subsciption in the price) and subscription works with your handset before you buy!
I'm no expert on Sat Nav (never owned one!) but people say Tom Tom software is good. Check the prices and compatibility, you need to buy maps that cover the area you want to visit. Also the phone may need more memory fitted to hold all the apps and software.
The Nokia is more a business phone that's what the E series is aimed at.
The P990i is more like the Nokia N series.
The P990i has a query keyboard and is bigger than the Nokia.
There is a nice review of the Nokia here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/item/Nokia_E65.php
I posted some links to the P990i reviews earlier, and have been asking lots of questions about the P990i as I've never debranded a phone or had one unlocked by the network, or installed Sat Nav softwareSeth.0 -

Totally agree about open standards. All our phones at home go to our PABX which is connected to 2 pots ports on out ADSL modem so all out going calls are free UK, US, and other countries (I use VOIP stunt) over 2 years the credits purchased to get free calls and paid for sevices has been less than 15Euro!)
I might hook up the SE P990i to a free Sipgate.co.uk 0207 number for incoming calls only when I'm at home, for low priority calls (like ads in Gumtree / Loot)
I've also had bad experience with Gizmo. Are there other SIP clients for the P990i?
Skype is coming out for the PSP. It is amazing how these proprietary formats dominate some markets. Having said that the 20,000+ phones at work are SIPI think Skype / iTune / WMA et al are shadows of SIP / MP3 / Xvid content by volume. Sales figures for the open standards are harder to tie down, but the Open Standard are way ahead, and gaining market share. MS added Xvid support to the 360 in the fall update, hope Sony do something for the PSP.

I'd disagree, actually - the P990i, like the P910i and others before it, was Sony-Ericsson's idea of a business phone. Sadly, it wasn't very good.
Ironically, Nokia could slap an 'N' in front of the name and the E65 would make as good a 'consumer' phone as many of the N-series actually do! The only thing stopping it being a full-on 'consumer phone' is the limited camera (there's no flash at all, not even an LED, and it's a bit old-school with no dedicated camera button - but that does make it more discrete for taking pictures more subtly).
But then I might be biased - I loved the E65, and the P990i is what made me stop buying Sony-Ericsson phones, with its entirely pointless flip and crippling the jog dial (compared to the previous P910i).0
