We are looking to purchase a new property which has a combi oil boiler.
As we travel in the winter, can you use a wifi connected timer with these?
The boiler is situated outside

Almost certainly, yes. Any such 'Smart' - phone App - thermostat controller should do this - Hive, Nest, Wiser... whatevs. Is it a combi, or do you have a hot water cylinder? For the latter, you'll need a twin-channel version, but is exactly the same to operate. The actual 'stat' part will replace whatever is currently used to set the house CH temperature. Did you see what they had? When away in winter, you set it to a suitable anti-frost temp.1

All dependant on whether the boiler, controller and router can communicate with each other.
If you are relying on wireless connections, distance and home construction will be a factor.0 -

I have an external oil boiler (not combi).
I have a Drayton Wiser thermostat which I can control from the app for heating and water.
If I am away during winter I program the heating to come on if temp falls to12 degrees.
In the event of WiFi failure, the internal WiFi still ensures it will come on. (The unit light shows red but the heating still comes on daily per your settings.)
You cannot control it via the app until the normal WiFi is resumed.
Tried and tested and kicks in as it should. 👌
If I'm away any other time then I control via the app as and when I need to.2 -
Yes, you 100% can. Wifi enabled thermostat connects exactly the same way a low tech thermostat does. I have mine connected to a wifi enabled thermostat and smart TRVsSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0
