Son is tellling me the cost of tuition plus rent is about £3k more than the max loan he gets....
Doesn't seem right?

What about food etc?

He's got Aspergers - did v well as an undergrad etc but sometimes we need to check things. Like this which he suddenly thought to mention!

The loan is a contribution to the cost of postgraduate study. Studying a course with a lower fee would mean more of the loan could be used for other things.
  • So its possible then? Hmmm - he decided to go to York Uni for his Masters which, by the sounds is not the cheapest....
  • Jeez student loans are bad enough but even worse when they don't cover the cost.....
Scandalous - in my day student grant covered it all pretty much. And government has done well out of me in tax last 35 years....

Do you mean £3k more a year?  Or term?  Or what?  Student loan only covers tuition fees.  Maintenance grant is supposed to help (but not fully cover) things like rent which can easily be £800/month depending where you are.  There are certain other loans and grants you may be able to get but I'm assuming you've got everything you are eligible for.  So £3k shortfall a year (£250/month) after the "max loans" is entirey possible .  We are expecting to contribute double that when our son goes to Uni but it's been that way for years.

When I went to Uni the student loans covered the course tuition fees, but my parents had to pay £200/month for accomodation (this was 25 years ago) and gave me £25/week for food.  I basically had to use my £1500 overdraft and then make it up by working 50 hour weeks in the summer holidays
  • £3K per year shortfall plus living expenses of course.
Postgrad course so he gets a max of £19K which you pay tuition fees plus everything else from.

Yeh I'm a bit older. It was a grant when I went to college. I come from a coal mining family was brought up by single parent on a council estate - and Dad worked in a factory all his working life. I had a full grant at the time.

My life and finances are a world away from Dads and grandparents. Yeh I can afford to pay a few £1000 for my son BUT my Dad would not have been able to back in the day.....

Its sad there may be kids out there in same position - its just not right.

  • Summer jobs in this part of the world. Hmmm. Not easy. Theres plenty of people who can't get full time jobs.....

Post graduate study has only been funded since the 2016-17 academic year. Before then all post graduates were expected to self fund.

When funding was introduced, most universities increased tuition fees! I doubt that York is out of kilter with other universities of similar status offering similar courses.

In your day post grad had to be self funded so there would have been no grant and no loan so the existence of a loan that contributes towards costs is arguable an improvement

How well the government has done out of you is yet to be determined, your high cost to the NHS typically occurs later in life.
