Why did DCB Legal ask me for my DOB

DCB Legal rang me earlier today to see whether I would settle a parking fine. We couldn't agree a sum, so off to court we go.... But what I found curious was that they asked me for my Date of Birth when doing a security check. "I haven't given you my date of birth!" I replied. "We can find that out from a third party!" was the reply! Is this true? I know they can access my car details from the DVLA database, but DOBs are personal, and I only share with banks and insurance companies etc. Can you really find out DOBs from third parties? Wouldn't that be a breach of data protection laws?

As I recall it's recorded on your credit reports which are in the public domain.

Stop talking to them on the phone
  • Credit Reports are not public. They can only be accessed by people with a legitimate interest i.e. if you apply for credit. DCBL Legal should not be able to access my credit rating as I owe them no money (until a court tells me I do).

Block and report their number to the ICO as an unwanted call. ;)

Prevention is better than cure,  don't take the calls, dont speak to them or debt collectors,  then you cannot be asked these questions , but it's usually so they can tell if you are the correct Jane Doe or John Smith , same as signing in at the doctors

As for the data,  you would be surprised how easy it is for these tracing services to get hold of and use your data

Nope. They are allowed to do a soft trace.
