I am/was a dual fuel customer with BG since I moved into my house in December 2021. Everything done online with setting up account bills etc, how ever about 3 years ago my gas account disappeared I have contacted BG several times about this and asked for my account to be reinstated but never received anything from in paper work as my gas account was not showing online. Even when I rang them they had no record of my account from when it disappeared.

I have now received a letter from BWlegal saying I owe £2,392.62 in unpaid bill even though BG have never attempted to contact me regarding this. OFGEM say thy can only claim upto 12 months in arrears if they have not billed me or contacted me regarding , is this correct in my circumstance and if so how do I got about letting BW know this?

Open a dispute with BG, and mention the 12 month back billing rule.
Then tell BWLegal that the bill is in dispute and they should refer the matter back to BG.  That is all you need to say to BWLegal. Don't engage with them at all.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Obviously you are going to owe something for the past 12 months of bills, but presumably you have that set aside somewhere, and also have a full history of meter readings taken during the period in question so you can accurately establish what should in fact be the billed amount?

I have no issue paying back what I legally owe, which is why I have started this thread.

The advice in post #2 is good advice. Wonder if your issue is to do with BG changing over billing systems ? Since BW Legal have your address ,there is probably a new account set up for gas with a different reference .

I wasn't suggesting otherwise - you'll note I had already presumed that you had the money set aside. Hopefully you do have the relevant readings too though as those will be pretty essential in ensuring that you are charged for that 12 month period correctly.
