Gift aid as possible non tax payer

I've noticed that a lot of places offer two ticket options, one with gift aid and one without. I'm self employed and don't know whether I'll earn enough to pay tax over the course of the year. What happens if I choose the gift aid ticket? Would I end up being charged extra when it comes to self assessment time, or would the charity just not get the extra payment from government? Also am I supposed to remember every time I chose the gift aid option and enter it on my tax return?

If you do not pay enough tax to cover the gift aid then, yes, you will be charged the amount not covered.2
