October 2025 Grocery Challenge

Today I spent £13 in the market on free range eggs, sausages and a couple of lamb chops. Then to Sainsbugs to get some new pyjamas as they are doing 20% off clothes at the moment and my old ones are going into holes. While there got sidetracked by the mince pies, two packs for £2 with neck tar.
Finally I drove to Lidl and spent £11 on some groceries and fruit. I'll need to get some milk, but that's it for this week, hopefully.

Good morning All
Well, I think I went a little mad in L!dl yesterday. Earlier in the week, I noticed that, in their weekly leaflet, they were promoting whole ducks as one of their “offers of the week”, selling a 2kg duck for £8.99. I’d asked DH to collect one, while he was shopping with his mum down in Somerset, but her local L!dl hadn’t had any delivered, so I popped into a branch on my way home from getting my eyes tested. Luckily they had at least 5 or 6 ducks, so I picked up two and walked to the checkout. No cash tills at the self-service, so I had to queue. A couple of minutes in and my arms were screaming. I hadn’t bothered with a basket and 4kg gets really heavy when you have to wait around.
That wasn’t the real problem, though. The real problem is even if we have duck for dinner tonight, how the hell am I going to store the second one? The freezer is stuffed to bursting. Heavens, it still holds last Christmas’ back-up goose! Well, this morning, I won at freezer Tetris:
There really isn’t any space left. £17.98 spent. This brings our GC spend to £89.18/£211, leaving £121.82 for the rest of the month.

ETA: DH spent £2.10 on lemons and lemon juice for us, while he was in L!dl shopping for his mum, so I’ve edited the above totals accordingly."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

Well done @PipneyJane your freezer looks very organised with only standing room left for the duck!
I often end up playing freezer tetris. Then write a list with asterisks with stuff I want to use up soon. Currently planning to use up some overly ripe frozen gooseberries. They were too liquidy when I made crumble last, so I'm mixing them with some cooking apples for the next one. Looking forward to the gooseberry bag sized hole in the freezer, and the crumble of course!8 -
I did a small shop at Lidl this week and got an sainsbobs delivery mainly to keep myself from buying rubbish.
However I'm finding sainsbobs quality in fresh stuff for delivery really bad lately. This time I've had to ask for a refund for about £15 worth of food for short dates and quality. Actually getting terrible. I might switch to te*Co
I've still got two weeks of my month left and I'm getting close to the end of my budget. I need to rein it in!

9th Oct, I had to park at Asda superstore for the morning WI meeting, because the church hall carpark was full. It would have been rude not to shop afterwards, and we needed milk, though frequent shopping upsets the budget.

4 ys figs 66p,
7 small bananas 88p,
grapes and clementines on offer,
milk 2x 4 pints
