HP Pavilion G6 - screen issue upon start ups

When i start up my old HP Pavilion G6 laptop sometimes i get a screen like the pictures below.
Doesn't happen all the time. When it does, turning it off and on again (maybe a few times ) gets it going.
What would be the most likely issue? The screen itself or wiring to the screen possibly?
There are a couple of blotches on the screen too.
Only using it as a second standby laptop.

I had similar on an old HP laptop, was fine for a few minutes then splat.
My local computer guy said it was either the screen shot or the graphics chip had fried - either repair would not have been financially sensible.1
