Isn't IBAN needed for international payments?
UK sort codes have hypens too, but  a sort as a part of the corresponing IBAN, doesn't have hypens.
UK sort codes are presented with hyphens, but they can often be omitted when entering online (some forms inset them automatically, others just want the 6 digits).
Perhaps the hyphens in South African sort codes are not in fixed positions, so are really needed.
