opsnap / operation snap / police dash cam footage submitting - waste of time.

First off because I know someone will come with it - "there's bigger problems going on", go ahead with that nonsense point.
What a waste of time this is, submitting dash cam footage to the police for various offences.
I'd seen people complaining about how they were 'done' by the police on the back of someones footage. I thought rightly so but more - how do you actually do that, so looked in to it & found this opsnap.
Didn't actively go looking for anything. No cycling mikey. I just drove.
1) had one guy all over my back end. Could barely see his number plate. Very aggressive driving. Check his reg & he's no tax or MOT. Submit footage plus pointing this out.
Verdict - we don't deal with no tax or MOT.
Hmm, great. I bet you do if I drive around without it though!
2) A woman driving past my front end (I was parked up, she drove across) quite clearly on her phone. Sent them unedited & also slowed down footage where you can see the reg & also her clearly holding her phone.
Verdict - not enough evidence.
3, 4 & 5) People blatantly running red lights. I'm not talking amber gamblers. I'm talking blatant. One was sat at a red for a while & got fed up of waiting & just went. Reg is clear.
6) A guy weaving in and out of traffic, aggressive overtaking, pulls out on someone on a roundabout narrowly missing getting clipped. He's then on my shoulder & starts driving down the wrong side of the road but not actually overtaking me yet before pulling back in. Check his reg - no tax & no MOT.
No response for 3-6. Think ok I had no-can-do replies for the others so maybe these have lead to something. I contact them to check.
No. The system has changed. If it leads to something you'll be contacted & if it doesn't then you simply wont be. Therefore they all lead to nothing.
So basically do what you want out on the roads, unless it's in front of a cop, because if someone reports you you'll get away with it.
And don't bother reporting anyone because nothing will happen. The system is just for show to tick a box & say they're offering something.

So your complaint is that you are being a good and vigilant citizen by submitting to the police every bit of footage that shows someone commiting an offence (in your opinion) and yet the police (or very probably the civilian contractors who deal with this stuff) don't come back and give you the praise and commendation you think you deserve?2

you should consider your dash cam to be there to protect you in the event of an accident - and hopefully the evidence it records may help apportion blame in that incident - though some insurance companies will still split 50/50 liability in any case.
You don't need to be the local sherrif, checking everyone's tax and MOT.
Just crack on with your own life and don't stress the rest

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.4 -

Im sure flaneus knows this as well but for whatever reason they're trying to create something here.
No I'm not looking for a pat on the back or whatever agenda anyone is trying to come with here. I wasn't actually looking for anything, I just submitted footage & left it at that.
They responded & so I thought OK they must respond to each submit. That must be the procedure.
So when they didn't respond I thought did they even get it. Let me check.
Since they tell you, or told you, nothing doing if recording someone with their phone in their hand wasn't enough evidence, I assumed the flipside was a yeah this footage will be used to take things further, nothing more required of you kind of thing.
As simple as that, no matter how someone may want to put a twist on it to boost their MSE thanks count.
No such thing as an offence in my opinion. Law states messing around on your phone when driving is a no no.
Deciding to stop at a red light, get fed up of waiting & then just drive through anyway is not an offence in my opinion. It's an offence.
Maybe if one of these people end up killing someone you know through offences in someone's opinion it might not have been an offence eh?

OK let me put a hypothetical up here.
Your neighbour/work colleague/spouse doesn't like you.
They are a technical wizz.
Using AI and some knowledge they can generate a highly convincing video of you driving your car through a red light at 80mph, holding a phone in one hand and a Big Mac in the other.
They then submit this to whatever-its-called.
Would you be happy when the summons appears in your letter box?
There's a piece of work that needs to happen between you submitting your video and the miscreant being dragged away to chokey. People sending in thousands of bits of grainy, out of focus, wobbly (even crystal-clear, stable 4K) dashcam footage is easy, trivial even - processing that footage and the subsequent actions (if any) is the hard and expensive bit.
I know you asked for it not to be mentioned but what would you prefer the police to be spending their resources on - catching murderers, rapists & terrorists or people WhatsApping at traffic lights?

I'll be honest, due to your opener & your previous posts on this thread I just skimmed to the end there.
And there is no or.
People who come with that line are ridiculous. "there's worse things going on"
So where do you draw the line?
You get punched in the face but there's worse things going on because some people get a hammer to the back of the head.
But they can't complain because some people get tortured before they suffer that.
And then some would argue that anything involving kids trumps anything with adults.
So when there's always bigger & bladder things can only The Ultimate victim complain & nobody else?
And who decides what's the worst thing anyway?
Or should we just expect anything illegal to be dealt with?

Resource constraints. And priorities.
You want more red light jumpers prosecuted (don't we all) then give more money to the police, the CPS and the Court Service.
That of course means less money for the Health Service, Education and the Armed Services etc
So put up taxes.....0 -
I think I might have bothered to do the same as the OP and reported the incidents.
I'd have been quite surprised to hear back at all.
I don't think I'd have bothered to chase up non-responses.
And I certainly wouldn't have bothered to start a thread on here.
But...it is the praise, vent & warnings board so it's up to the OP.0
