Ebay - Buyer unable to pay due to 'Unable to deliver to address'

Hoping for some advice. I'm a private seller, one of my items has sold. The buyer contacted me shortly after to say they couldn't pay as the item 'couldn't be posted to their address'. The buyer is based in Northern Ireland.

It's Simple Delivery, large envelope using Evri. The item is a video game.

Not sure what my options are, can I change it to Royal Mail, or would it be best to cancel (if I can?) and relist asking them to then put in an offer which I will accept?

As it's simple delivery you can't change it and couriers are often an issue with NI buyers. However the ebay system should have picked this up automatically so a complaint to them would be in order.

All you can do is cancel the sale using the option 'problems with buyers address' and re list. However unless buyer is actually able to work out how to opt for RM under SD,  it would probably happen again if buyer just rebuys.

It's also very unusual for a LL item to be sent as Evri as for LLs RM is cheaper and is the default on ebay SD (parcels tend to default to Evri as it's cheaper). Can you just check that you do have RM enabled in your SD settings?

Thanks for the reply and advice!

I don't have RM enabled, just Evri, local post offices round here even in shops are funny hours round my way or no where near an Evri drop off point. So I just opted for Evri and disabled RM.

What I was thinking was, cancel then relist with just RM enabled. Buyer then purchases via an offer. Should then work?

You might want to check if your Evri shop takes RM items, all mine do , plus my Yodel shop takes RM as well.

If you want to ensure that buyer gets only RM then you would need to remove Evri entirely from your SD settings, but a word of warning, that makes it more expensive.

My understanding with simple delivery was that ebay would find the cheapest postage option. For example before SD I had a parcel to send to the Isle of Skye iirc evri wanted about £8 but royal mail was £3.50.
Royal mail has a charter to cover every UK address, evri doesn't have to.

If you have royal mail disabled and evri don't deliver to that address the buyer will be unable to purchase from you. Perhaps you could try listing with both evri and royal mail enabled and see if ebay will issue a royal mail label.
To date I've sold about 20 items on SD and all bar one have been evri. The royal mail one was heavier than most but they were all small parcel sized.

It looks as though ebay have seen that the seller preferences (evri only) and the buyer address are not compatible so have prevented the buyer from completing the purchase. The other options would have been to override the seller preference or to generate a label which evri returns to the sender.

When you say 'large envelope' do you mean under 350 x 250 x 2.5cm large letter?
I've just sent a parcel in a large envelope, but it was too big to go as a large letter.

Thanks everyone for your advice. All sorted, buyer was happy to cancel and for me to relist with only RM being the option, even though it would cost a bit more. I have no other items listed at the moment, so the change of delivery option was fine. Package on it's way this morning!

My experience is that if you enable both, 95% of items will be evri. I suspect there may be a window 2-5kg possibly where royal mail is cheaper, and the occasional customer in a harder to reach location. Although intriguingly I've just had an evri label for Shetland, which surprised me.
  • I wonder what the issue with Evri was? Evri do deliver in Northern Ireland, they are around my area every day.
