car insurance renewal

Hi everyone,
I was under the impression that car insurance renewals have been coming down recently, but my experience seems the opposite.
-
My renewal quote from my current provider has come in at just under £605 (I usually pay monthly).
-
I checked with another provider and their quote came in at £960 for the same car/cover details.
Why such a huge difference? Is anyone else finding the same? Is there something I’m missing that’s making quotes higher instead of lower?
Also, while I’m reviewing my insurances – does anyone know where it’s best to get insurance for mobiles and tablets? Would it usually work out better through my bank, or is it worth looking at specialist comparison sites?
Any advice or tips before I decide would be appreciated.
Thanks.Comments

Is the £605 an increase on what you currently pay and is it the exact same level of cover?
As it's already cheaper to stay. Get a quote with them as a new customer service what the charge would be.
Mobile/tablets. Depends on the level of cover.
It may already be covered on contents insurance.
If the bank offer it. Only you can decide if the costs us worth it.
My bank fee is £10 a month for gadget insurance, travel insurance and breakdown.
I wouldn't get all 3 for under £120 a year so it's worth it.
If I only needed one it wouldn't be1 -

I did some shopping around, as I always do at the time recommended on MSE, and saved £200 on my car insurance.First time I can recall such a big saving.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0

I used a comparison site and found a much lower quote, but on checking the small print, the T & C were very different0

Unlike cars there's no legal obligation to insure them, and for low-to-mid-market devices insurance can be a large % of the value of the device each year. Plus the excess can be significant. One of the reasons I dropped my FlexPlus account was that, despite us being a family with 5 phones and 3 tablets between us, no-one had a device worth making an insurance claim on.Of course if you've all got flagship devices, insurance might make more sense.N. The cost of borrowing to pay your car insurance has gone up. So, that could be part of it.

Just to share - sometimes worth asking. My car ins last year was £325, renewal quote from esure came in at £282 so I was pretty pleased. Did the comparisons and best saving was £14 at £268 hardly worth changing but I did the online chat and asked could they match the like for like quote from Sheilas wheels. They ran through a few std questions then came back with £232 as the new quote.Well worth asking! I accepted the cover. Why have you only checked one other provider? Why not check 100+ by using the likes of confused.com?
Prices always vary significantly because insurers price based on their own experience, they also have different strategic priorities and dont look at one year in isolation. If they've had a few bad years prices will have to go up whereas a firm thats been doing well for a few years may cut their prices to get greater volume.
Remember we had a long discussion in a pricing meeting several years ago about our TPO and TPFT customers, they are often more risky customers but the prices reflect this. Our Commercial Director wanted to not write this business because it wasnt the target customer base but others pointed out if was profitable business so why double the price to try and get rid of them.
Dont have discrete insurance on tablets or mobiles, they are covered implicitly by home insurance for theft, accidental damage etc. If you do want to buy specialist policies make sure you understand the cover; many arent new for old and so claimants are disappointed when they "accidentally" drop their iPhone X, expect to get a brand new iPhone 16 but instead get a reconditioned iPhone X0 -
