ds lite charger problem

hi, I brought a ds lite from a catalogue, when it arived i have found that is imported from america, which isnt a major problem, but it would have been nice to have been told when i ordered.
The major problem is the charger. It is not even a genuine nintendo charger, just some cheap shoddy third party crap. Within 3 minutes of plugging it in the damn thing sparked, let off a loud bang and tripped all my sockets. It scared the hell out of my 13 month daughter, who was not far from it.
So obviously im not happy, what should i say to them ? should i threaten them with trading standards or something? and is it reasonable to expect some kind of compensation for the hassle ?
thanks for any help.

If the catalogue didn't describe it as an import and didn't mention the charger I'd at least demand a refund and buy a proper one. If I was feeling stroppy I'd report them to trading standards for false advertising and the dangerous charger. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
I would be more worried that the DS is second hand or faulty returns as well... There is obviously something dodgy if it arrived with non official parts..
Also you will have to read ALL the small print within the catalogue as well as it may well be somewhere in thier T&C about imports0
