Can the OP change the title to something more accurate?1

That's not correct if you phone to renew they take the card details but the payment isn't taken to renewal dateborn_again said:Why do you think it's wrong to payment at the time you made the new purchase? Had you just renewed without negotiating a new deal, then it would have been taken at renewal date.
You order goods from a retailer the vast majority take payment straight away.
How would they take it at the renewal date unless you phone and gave card details1 -
Perphaps he paid by CC not DC so no issue with lack of fundsGrey_Critic said:Question is have they actually taken the money or does it show pending on your bank account? My various insurances vary - some take payment straight away whilst other do not do so until the date the policy comes into account.I can see problems where they do not take it straight away - try to take on the day policy starts and bank refusing due to lack of funds. Then of course what happens if the bank says no and you are then possibly driving without insuflaneurs_lobster said:
Me too, with BofScot. Maybe the driver (!) for immediate payment is the use of a new card.DrEskimo said:
I just renewed mine with admiral and like the OP after looking on comparison sites and haggling, I got a renewal that was a better price than originally offered so stayed with them.
They didn’t take payment until the date of renewal though (2 weeks later). So perhaps it varies by provider?0 -
Churchill have admitted their mistakes, apologised and paid me £200 compensation.
1. They admitted they were advised of the new card number on renewal last year. Because the customer assistant was quoting my old card number I thought (incorrectly as it turned out) that I’d failed to inform them. I was able to forward them last year’s renewal confirmation showing my current card number.
2. They admitted they failed to advise me that the payment would be taken on that day.
Fair do’s to Churchill, my complaint has been thoroughly checked and I’m pleased to hear that their policies on renewal and improved quotes have not changed.
Pays to challenge doesnt it?!0 -
They would use details they hold on system.35har1old said:

Expired card makes no difference, as they simply get new card details via Visa/Mastercard systems.
Never read the renewal letter that says. If you are happy with the quote, you do not need to do anything further. Will will take payment on the renewal date.Life in the slow lane0
