My vacuum cleaner sucks (or rather doesn’t!)

I have an Electrolux bagless v.c (model no ZT3510) T8. For some time, I have been experiencing loss of suction. It starts off ok but after a minute or two it makes a ‘whooshing’ noise & then all suction is lost. After cleaning the filter(s), suction is fully restored.

AFAIK, if there’s no problem with the motor (there isn’t), then it’s odds on that it’s an airflow/filters issue.

I’ve carried out all the usual troubleshooting; checked the hose for blockage, emptied the dust canister/bin & cleaned both the HEPA filter & the smaller one which holds the square sponge, by giving them a good whacking against an outside wall. This has always done the trick in the past.

But… not this time! I decided to replace the HEPA filter as it was 2 or 3 years since last replacement, thinking this might resolve the issue but, no …just a ‘whooosh’ with no suction 😥

I know I could dispose of it & buy a new one but I really like this v.c (they’re discontinued).

Any advice or helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

If cleaning the filters solves the problem then it sounds like your problem was dirty filters

So clean the filter regularly then.

Not quite sure what else you want to be told.  If it stops sucking the filter is blocked. Its when you have a clean filter and there's no suction you need to worry...

Or buy a decent one ...if you are emptying the collection container often enough. They tend to block filters if the cyclone action stops working....such as if too full.
  • Sorry folks, for some reason only half of my post was actually posted. I’ve re-done to it to what it should have been.

It sounds like the pressure valve is deploying but I'm afraid I have no idea where its located on your vacuum, or whether all vacuums have them.  On my vax upright its on the top under the canister handle - its a circular plastic hole with slats across it, and is about an inch in diameter.  Its there to protect the motor.  It could be blocked too.

It usually means the hose is blocked somewhere.  They suggest you drop a coin down the hose to see if its clear, But if theres a bit of polythene stuck inside it may be lying flat only closing the hose off when its running.  I get someone to hold one end of the hose so I can stretch it fully to inspect.

To add, HEPA filter cleaning is often by washing. Maybe check in manual and see after that?
Also some of the 'pipes' can become blocked as well as the obvious hoses.

(Surely fluid dynamics is quite techie in it's application ? )
