Import tax / duty on Indian goods

Etsy should be charging you the VAT when you buy via them and then nothing to pay on import but it does depend a little on the vendor following Etsy's instructions around postage.

Goods sold for under £135 should have UK VAT charged by the merchant and they pass it to HMRC unless its sold via a market place like Amazon, Etsy, eBay etc in which case its the marketplace's responsibility to collect the VAT and pass it to HMRC. 

Normally the label from the market place will have an EORI number etc on it which allows customs to make checks and confirm it's already paid. Not all seller however follow process and there have been some reports on here of parcels under £135 coming with bills from the couriers.

On a personal level I regularly order stuff from India, the particular company appears to adjust the prices paid so that it's always under £135 no matter the real value. Their website doesnt break the cost down but would suspect they arent collecting tax for HMRC but I've not been charged any VAT on the 20 or so orders I've had from them in the last couple of years.
