    I’d say it was a bizarre situation. Depending on when this happened it sounds as though you’d ‘left’ on the 31st August and now they don’t want to pay you. What if you had accepted another role elsewhere?
    Whilst most VR/VS is signed off by a solicitor (to protect the employer more than anything) I’d imagine a decent employment law solicitor would still have a field day with this case on the surface. As it was voluntary I assume you don’t want the job back?
    I’d definitely seek some professional advice and check your document trail. 
    There are some strange businesses out there.

    PS. If it anything like my firm you are not allowed to give a reference, certainly not a bad one and all HR do is confirm the dates you were employed.

    99% of firms do this. It leaves them in all kinds of muddles.

    However, as a manager, I was allowed to give a personal reference, but not on headed paper.
