I’m a carer and want to do a craft course and an overnight stay in Wales for my birthday. Is it possible to get insurance for such a trip and would I be covered if I had to cancel because the person I care for got ill?

Are you paid to be a carer? If the person you care for an immediate family member?1

You can insurance for UK travel I think you need to have booked two nights in paid accommodation.
You need to check out the policy wording which will vary from one policy to another.
Cancellation for illness would probably require a medical certificate.
You would need to check what cover was given if the person you cared for got ill.
Again if covered you would need confirmation of the illness and that it was not expected. There would probably be an excess to pay which may cancel out the value of any claim.1 -
Sounds like I will just have to risk it if I want to go.23/8/21

Your unlikely to be covered for your client being ill unless they are also a close relative0 -
You can mitigate any potential losses by using a booking engine like booking.com to buy your accomodation, and ensuring you book a place that offers free cancellation before the first day of stay... but as others have said you won't be able to get insurance cover for a one night stay, nor to cover cancellation due to your client being ill.0

Also if the illness is related to any existing condition the client has, it's unlikely to be covered anyway.0
