I took out I think 4 student loans  1995/96 1996/97 1997/98 1998/99.

I have not had any letters or correspondence from any loan companies for a decade, the loans are not marked on any credit files. I am now 50. I hadn’t finished paying loans back and think last payment was c a decade ago - from memory there may be £4k remaining I can’t recall. How do I find out if these are wiped : written off?

It's a bit complicated - MSE says that students who started between 1990-97 and had the mortgage style ones  should be ok as they will be written off as the limit was 25 years (or sooner depending on age) so the last ones from on or before 31/8/98 would be out by 31/8/25

However, while the replacement Plan 1 were issued after 31/8/98, if you were already on the old style, you stayed on the old style. Therefore I would suspect that yours are probably still valid until 31/8/26 except for the fact you're now 50 so they should be wiped!

Also, if you earn under £41,613 though you won't normally have to repay anything as that is the threshold though you are meant to declare it for deferment to apply.

If they're not chasing you and not having anything off pay, to be honest I'd just leave it

As an example also, Erudio cancel the loans at 50 as well provided you are not behind with repayments

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
