I've installed a new PC at a mates today, along with Office 2021.
Everything appeared to be fine, but after I got back, he's telling me there's a problem with Outlook!
I've never used Outlook, so I'm in the dark a bit!
He tells me that he writes, say, 3 emails, hits 'send' and the progress bar doesn't move.
If he closes Outlook and restarts, one of the emails then sends, the bar stops again. Then just repeats until they've all gone!
He's restarted the PC a few times, but nothing changes.
He says sometimes he gets an error about 'something not syncing'. He is 100% not techy (at all). So getting info out of him is up hill work!
I'm hoping to connect to his PC tomorrow and check the setting, but apart from some basics, I have no idea how Outlook works!
Can anyone suggest what might be the problem and how to fix it?
The PC is running W11, the only programs installed are Office (2021, he only uses Word and Outlook) and Firefox.
The email account is Gmail.
Outlook is receiving emails without a problem.
Thanks...

I get a disconnect some times when the wifi is acting up. it tends to shut itself off mid afternoon. (needs a nap and a cuppa I guess) and while my OH doesn't have too many issues I have turn the wifi receiver/broadcaster off/on & to reconnect to the router and do all sorts of jiggery pokery. Sorry but I'm probably not much more techy than your friend.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Put the problem into an LLM like Gemini or ChatGPT and follow the suggestions to resolve. First thing to check is the SMTP settings, Outlook may not guess right if you let it “autodetect”. For Gmail it must be:SMTP server: smtp.gmail.comPort: 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)Authentication: required, using full Gmail address and password. NB Google no longer allows “less secure apps” (basic username/password logins). If his Gmail has two-factor authentication enabled, Outlook will need an app password generated in his Google Account → Security → App Passwords.1

465 is for SMTP over TLS or SSL - it's no longer officially registered by the IETF.
587 is for non-encrypted SMTP connections with optional support for upgrading the session to TLS or SSL via the STARTTLS SMTP extension. The usage of STARTTLS on port 587 is mandatory at gmail.
For some reason people have long confused TLS with STARTTLS.
