I don't think any of us have really got the full picture of what's going on here.
I can't imagine merchants would knowingly set up fraudulent automatic payments and then siphon away. Are they being compromised? Is the punter being compromised? Are payments actually going to these big name merchants? (if so, you'd think they'd be scrambling to refund, apologise and then beat down on Paypal hard).
