Combined delivery

I have my first combined delivery looming since the new simple delivery.

Does it do it automatically?

Sometimes. 
I think it depends if the buyer goes into the basket and pays for all the items in one go.
That seems to combine postage and charge some random amount.

If they go into purchase history and pay individually you'll get individual labels for each one.

As above really, there is no yes or no answer. I've had sales automatically combine and send buyer an invoice with one postage, btu I've also had a combined sale where buyer was charged for 2 individual items- ebay can't seem decide how to work this out.
