Qualifying for maternity allowance
I am a fresh immigrant on family visa, for context.
I’m pregnant and would like to qualify for maternity allowance. My husband works full time but we are not where £180 per week would not make a difference.
I have registered with HMRC as a self-employed having listed the activities I previously done as a freelancer abroad. However I have not earned anything here yet. Will I need to provide proof of income / performed work while seeking mat allowance? I know about class 2 national insurance contributions already.
To have it, can I invoice my husband for the work that I do? I have quite bad morning sickness so “genuine” work is out of the question at the moment.

No, he is not self-employed. I could invoice him for what I normally do (private teaching) — would it though be flagged as suspicious by HMRC if my only client leading to my mat leave is my spouse? It looks like they won’t care at all how much, if anything, I earned, but I would like to hear it from someone else. Thanks!sheramber said:Is your husband self employed?0 -
Just follow the eligibility link provided above.
Lots of people employ members of their family. As long as the work being done is genuine.
If in doubt, contact Maternity Allowance. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Is this a genuine invoice for work completed? If not it sounds fraudulent and a scam to get a state benefit.applepeeldog said:

What are you privately teaching him?
Have you read the details of self employed eligibility relating to having paid class 2 NIC ?
