Travel Insurance for trip more than 90 days

My wife and I are planning a trip to NZ and Australia that means we're away from 93 days. Probably bad planning by us as we have annual travel insurance but it only covers trips up to 90 days.
We spoke to our insurer to extend but they will only add an extra 30 days and it works out quite expensive i.e. several hundred pounds for just 3 days extra cover. They weren't very flexible.
I have several questions: If I don't extend with them does it mean my whole trip is not covered as they say trips up to 90 days? Or am I just covered for the first 90 days?
One option might be to just buy a week's insurance with someone else on the basis that I'm covered for the 90 days with my current insurer and the remaining 3 days with someone else but I have the fear that my whole trip is then not covered as its over the 90 day rule.
I did get some quotes for single trip for the full 93 days but this was quite expensive too and doesn't seem the best option as we're already paying for the annual insurance.

I obviously don't know what your trip is costing but unless the extra cost of extending with your existing insurer is a large proportion of this then I'd be minded to take this option.
Simplest in terms of admin, no need for extra applications and gives you continuity of coverage.1 -
ultimately you need to read your own policy terms but generally if the trip is 93 days then you are simply not covered rather than being covered for the first 90 days. Secondly, most travel policies must incept before you leave the UK so adding a standard policy to the end for 3 days wouldn't work. There are however policies that will cover you if you will already be travelling at the time it kicks in - these are really designed for those that decide to extend their holiday whilst away but can be used for other purposes.Goal_Easy_Life said:My wife and I are planning a trip to NZ and Australia that means we're away from 93 days. Probably at this point a case of balancing the costs of extending the existing policy, buying a stand alone single trip or adjusting the holiday to 90 days.1
