Ebay buying an item listed in Euros, paying in Euros?

I recently made an Ebay test purchase: I logged on to Ebay.de from my U.K account to buy an item listed in Germany for sale in Euros. I used a Euro bank card added to my Ebay account. I selected that card to pay in Euros. The final payment taken from my Euro account had increased! It looks like Ebay had converted the original Euros price listed on their German site to Sterling at their comission rate, then processed the card payment in Sterling!

I can add a Euro card to a PayPal account, jump through hoops, select it as default, then modify the automatic debit card assignment (If it's pre-authorised with Ebay). However I suspect Ebay will still convert a foreign currency to that of the locality registered on the account? If a PayPal non automated payment is made with a default card set to e.g Euros, the payment will be made in Euros.

I wonder if anybody else has found this or have a solution to pay for items listed on Ebay within Europe with a Euros bank card which doesn't add commission charges?

  • If you've been debited in a different currency than the one you agreed to at checkout, you can raise a chargeback dispute with your card provider for the difference you were overcharged.

As you have a UK account it doesn’t matter where you log in, your account will default to your home currency.

However you need to check whether all the relevant taxes and VAT have been paid as would have happened if you’d bought from eBay Uk.

Can you not just go onto ebay.de and checkout as a guest?
Use the credit card at checkout unless you have a euros balance in a PayPal account

I looked at ebay.com and found an item for sale before I posted my advice and the checkout screen was showing my transaction to be USD as I'd expect it to be.

If this changes when checkout is finalised, without the user consenting to being billed in GBP, then there is a valid chargeback dispute for the card issuer to raise for the OP.

many years ago, I have ordered vintage shoes and coats from sellers on eBay-France before (about 5-6 times). It was quite simple and worked out cheap.

For me, I searched eBay.fr - found an item I liked.. most of the time the item I liked wouldn’t show on my Uk eBay account because they blocked Uk sellers from bidding, so I had to sign into eBay.fr, then I contacted the seller via eBay message (Using google translate) and asked them how much postage to the Uk would be / could they add a Uk postal option.. then I just bought the item through eBay.fr using PayPal. I had no problems.
