I am a freelance worker. I have not been without work for years. I am PAYE. If I was to take maternity leave am I entitled to any sort of maternity pay?

By freelance, do you mean self-employed or a contract worker?Have you looked into the criteria for maternity allowance? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

The rule for employers paying SMP from the last issue of printed full guidance was....
"For SMP purposes, if you have to pay employer’s secondary Class 1 NICs for your employees, or would but for their age or level of earnings and they satisfy all the qualifying conditions for SMP then you will be responsible for making the SMP."
To the best of my knowledge this has not changed.1
