I suppose you can make it easier by being vaguer. Part of what I was thinking of was making sure you didn't accidentally give false information in exception cases, and also making sure that you're dealing with offsetting correctly (i.e. where you're rectifying from DOL and the pension at retirement is going in one direction, and then the pension at GMP age starts going in the other).

But I suppose rather than saying "Your section gives increases in payment in line with RPI capped at 5% on excess and CPI capped at 3% on Post88 GMP, therefore increasing the proportion of your pension which is GMP has reduced your pension" (which will mostly be true, but might fall over for example if the excess got a proportionate first pension increase and the GMP didn't), you could say "your GMP at GMP increased and GMP increases between GMP age and current date were higher than excess increases so your pension has increased" for all members where rectification was done at GMP age and GMP had increased and the net pension had increased without worrying too much about exactly what the underlying increases were.

Although I'm not 100% confident you'd never have a situation where the actual thing going on was that you had a larger anti-franking uplift and your GMP pension increases have actually been lower but your pension has still had a net uplift due to the anti-franking...
...and you seriously think the average member would have a clue what that meant...? As for your final paragraph...
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • My original point was that providing an explanation that was going to be helpful to members wasn't nearly as easy as people seemed to think...

I my case the error was noted in the records held by HMRC and my pension administrators. A GMP recalculation  was carried out  and I had been underpaid since 2011. This resulted in a lump sum of £20,000 and interest of £5,000.

Reported the £5,000 to HMRC as interest but it appears by my conversation with them yesterday they do not propose to tax  me on the £5,000 because the error was not of my making.
