How do I use this Electricity Smart Card?

Hi all

This might sound daft initially but all will be revealed. So, I have recently purchased a house that requires total renovation. The previous tenant left me a bag of door keys, a Gas top up card and an Electric top up card. So, the lads demolishing the house told me that the lights had gone out today.  So, I gave one of the workers the Electric Top up card the previous tenant left me along with £20 to top up the card. The lad came back and told me “I’ve topped up the card, here’s the receipt… but there’s no slot on the meter to insert the card. A few hours later I went to investigate and lo & behold I can’t find a slot to enter the card. Any advice guys what to do before I ring British Gas?

First things first, don't use the topup cards left by the previous tenant. They'll be linked to the previous tenant's account. You might never see that £20 again.
Contact BG and set up your own account as the new owner. Tell them the date you purchased the propertyand the meter readings on that date.
Do you have smart meters? Share photos of them here if you're not sure.

Those cards, gas and electric will be linked to the old accounts in the name of Mrs S, so she may receive an extra £20 in her final statement now, if not already received.
Edit: You may be on credit meters and those cards were maybe used for making payment to account at PO or top up shop, as and when.
As said by QrizB above, you need to contact BG, they are your deemed supplier, as they were supplier for MrsS, once sorted you can change supplier, if you wish.
