The nature of the fixed direct debit payment method has progressively changed and they are now effectively a form of pre-payment account. You pay for your energy in advance by making a fixed monthly payment but with a small amount of leeway in case you go "overdrawn". On the flip side, you do get a lower rate for paying this way. So in answer to your question you are unlikely to get a full refund unless you switch to another supplier or payment method - or find a way to break the system. What you can often do is negotiate or request a lower monthly payment if you are building up an excessive amount of credit.1
