Exemption Threshold Questions

Am currently in the process of sorting out my mother in laws estate. We are hoping to transfer the unused exemption from when her husband passed away in 1992. Do I use 325000 as the threshold amount or would it be the threshold amount at the time which was 140000? What if any documents do I need to send to HMRC to claim the exemption? Many thanks.

If not of his NRB was used at the time, then you can clamp the full £325k If any was used up you reduce that buy the percentage used.
if her estate is below the combined NRBs then you don’t need to do an IHT return and don’t have to supply HMRC with anything. If it’s more than that you will need to do a full IHT return to claim one or both residential NRBs.0
