i'm not tech savvy at all and with windows 10 updates stopping and my laptop no longer communicating with my printer/scanner I think it's time to get replacements, I've had 10-15 years use out of them respectively so had my money's worth. As I don't know what I'm looking for can someone suggest an appropriate combination of laptop and printer/scanner? I use my laptop as my TV and radio, for email, music, photos, documents and general browsing and would hope not to spend more than £500 -£600

Given your budget a really great updated combo is well within your reach.
Printer / scanner is the bit that can really do some damage to your budget in running costs. You don't say if you need colour printing. If you can make do with B&W, unbelievably, Xerox B225 / B235 multifunction printers are really great value and the cost per page is 2.1p, they cost around £120 - £175 depending on where you go. If you want colour, Epson Ink Tank printers are great in terms of quality and print cost, something like the Epson Ecotank ET-2811 can be bought for under £200, great little printer with under 3p copy print cost. Just don't try and print War and Peace on it.
As far as the laptop is concerned, try a refurbished i5 laptop with 8 or 16GB RAM, a Dell Latitude or Inspiron can be purchased for £250 - £300 which will have ample power and storage for your needs. In terms of office applications, give Libre Office a try before paying for MS Office, it can do a huge amount of what full MS Office can do, and it's free. If you just buy MS Office, look for a licence, not an Office 365 subscription, there's loads of places where you can buy a permanent licence, not an overpriced annual subscription.
The other option, of course, is to look at Linux. Would you be open to trying / learning that? It is much easier to use than it used to be, more secure and without MS nag screens trying to get you to buy extras at regular intervals.
The other option is a Chromebook, which hands all your documents and storage responsibilities to Google. Personally not that comfortable with that, but it is very secure against virus / ransomware threats. Pricing for an i3 Chromebook, new, is between £270 - £350, I have always liked the Lenovo machines in Chromebooks, their build and display quality always seems better than the more popular HP's.
Hope this helps1 -
You might be better with a laptop with a large screen for TV.
I use HP Envy 5646. Very cheap to buy and their ink is great value"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

OP may be best going to a semi-competent retailer like John Lewis to discuss needs and get two year warranty on laptop purchase. AVoid Currys.2
