Does she enjoy sewing in her free time or is it just in connection to her studies?

I  ask because if it is just in connection to her studies then I would try and get to know the ins and outs of what she makes and the particular tools needed for that activity.
Sewing / Craft tools can be really expensive so it would be less wasteful  to buy the things needed.

If she sews for herself, dressmaking etc, than a general spread of items would be good.

Boyes is quite a good store for finding a variety of tools/materials etc.

I think it's likely that she has all the basics. Personally I'd buy her a handy sewing related tin she could easily use for odds and ends and put a voucher for Hobbycraft or similar inside or cash.

I, long since, outgrew a traditional sewing box or basket and now have separate storage boxes/tins for threads, tapestry wool, embroidery silks etc etc. I do have one box for basic running repairs with black and white thread, basic scissors, pins etc but she's likely to have one  of these already. 🤔

She enjoys sewing too and works on projects outside of her studies.

I've spoken with her partner, they've suggest more storage than tools, especially storage on the move as she'll take it with for car journeys or down time.
I think I may also get her a selection of gutterman threads as they look a nice pretty collection

The gutermann thread box I linked to would be a good gift to put the threads in

Thanks all, birthday present sorted, with many of the recommendations from this thread. She'll be getting it a little late but hopefully she'll like it

  • Without wanting to repost the ridiculously long link :-)
I bought the one from JL, I've never bought from Temu and I didn't have the time to allow delivery.
I liked the Gutterman one, I've bought some gutterman threads, and thought it's something I can buy a few now and then to help build her collection

Completely understand the comment about not buying from Temu or Shein. I felt exactly the same until a few months ago when I wanted some extra sewing machine feet and realised they were about £20 to buy the Janome ones, or less than a pound each from Temu. With a minimum first order of £10 and free postage it seemed worth a go - and they are perfect.
