Landing and stairs carpet

Hi. I'm slowly working through a very long list of home improvements and trying to decide what's next up. I need a new carpet for my stairs and landing. It's a long narrow landing maybe about 8m total and the stairs split on a half landing. Has anyone recently done anything similar and would you be willing to share with me how much it cost please?

You should try a local carpet place, they may have offcuts for stairs. Stairs tend to cost more labour wise, but due to their width tend to be more suited for offcuts. We had stairs up to first floor, landing round to second stairs, and second stairs, all done for about £350 last year.

We had two staircases and a landing done earlier in the year. The carpet is patterned and everything was fitted to match up. Landing is about 6 metre I think. In total it was around £1300 including new underlay, grippers and door bars where needed. The carpet itself was £900 though. Fitting cost was £165

Just don't buy the cheapest for stairs, it will soon show wear on the edges.  look for the best you can afford.
  • Thanks for your comments that's really helpful. I think if I budget £1k as a starting point I should be ok I don't want anything fancy but decent quality and I will need underlay and all the gubbins I kind of had a grand in the back of my mind so that's a good starter for 10 and if I can save a bit by shopping around for roll ends or offcuts then even better

It is a fair starting point.
An 80/20 wool blend is the normal for high traffic areas, if you can afford it. Prices start from around £25 per M2.
A good underlay is important as well.

Just to add, if there are carpet grippers there already, don't pull them up until you've spoken to the carpet fitters. Our guy said the new ones are rubbish compared to the old ones, so he always tries to use the ones that are there if possible. Saves a job as well.
  • If there are any creaks, this is a good opportunity to fix them before the carpet fitters arrive.
  • Thank you for the tips and pointers.X

What's that like for hanging on to cat hair? Its currently ancient Axminster and it seems to have a permanent layer of grey and ginger felt regardless how often I hoover🤷

They should be OK as normally they will have a short pile.
You need to avoid anything long  or with looped pile.
