Ikea delivery so bad it looks like they are deliberately trying to drive me mad

Has anyone had any experience with Ikea delivery because it’s so bad it looks like they are deliberately messing it all up.

I have been waiting for about two weeks for a large order of bookcases. That isn’t long but it genuinely looks like I could be waiting for years, at least. Perhaps indefinitely.

It’s one large order that has been cancelled twice by them and I have had at least 6 or 7 delivery dates. Each time the delivery day arrives it is delayed.

They keep sending me text messages the day before the delivery with a time, and it never arrives. This morning they called me on the telephone to say it will arrive today. They actually called me. When I checked the website for tracking it’s now been put back again to Friday 5th. It’s Monday.

I didn’t think it would arrive today, and it definitely isn’t going to arrive on Friday.

It feels like I’m being haunted. I can’t get in to my kitchen because there are boxes of stuff that I can’t deal with until I get the bookcases up.

No one knows what’s going on or what the delay is but it looks like it keeps getting delayed because items are out of stock. I actually managed to get them to deliver a tiny part of the order separately and they said that is coming tomorrow, but who knows.

This is what it looks like is happening. When you place the order, the order will go through and anything out of stock, you can’t order. That makes sense. But this is the crazy part. And it is crazy. Einstein said ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results’. It looks like you place the order and it goes through but they won’t deliver it for 5 days. They don’t put the order together until the day of delivery or the day before by which time, something can be out of stock and the entire order is then rescheduled for a few days later, by which time something else can be out of stock. And it never ends because there is always something out of stock.

If you have a large order, 50 or 60 items, it’s almost impossible for all of the items to be in stock at the same time on a specific date.

It’s a form of gambling. You’re betting hundreds of pounds that your items will be in stock and if they are you win your order.

it’s the only rational explanation, that in 2025 Ikea still haven’t worked out how to send orders out. There is no other way that they can get it so wrong. It can’t be a simple mistake because the odds of making a simple mistake that delays every single delivery must be astronomical. It would mean either I am the unluckiest Ikea customer in history or the people working there are the most inept shop assistants and warehouse assistants in history.

If I’m correct, it’s astonishing that no one has worked out that the ordering system doesn’t work. I’m not just having a moan. It doesn’t work. If you can’t fulfil an order after 7 attempts, and there is no sign of the delivery ever arriving, there is a serious problem.

I can’t be the only one that has experienced this. Has anyone ever received their Ikea order.

This is the first time I have had any dealings with them but they are a household name. I thought it was all legit, but it’s anxiety inducing. Their reviews are terrible.

They charge 39 quid for this. It all looks like good stuff when you go in there but my advice for anyone thinking of shopping at Ikea is unless you can pick it up, don’t bother. If you can get it somewhere else, do that. And if you are thinking of getting a kitchen from them, you need your head examined.

I've had faultless service when I ordered from Ikea.  But if you're not happy with them then maybe cancel the order and go elsewhere

I had 4 double wardrobes, 1 single wardrobe and 4 sets of drawers all delivered together from Ikea within a week.

  • You're probably back of the queue because you keep accepting appalling service. Inform them, preferably in writing, that if the order is not delivered in full within 7 days you'll cancel the entire thing. I had something to a lesser extent with my sofa and two chairs. The first time the delivery failed I said it's not a problem, but I won't accept another delay. The second time nobody turned up on the Friday as specified. I rang and said if it's not with me in full by "tomorrow", Saturday, I will cancel the order. "We don't deliver Saturday," they said. I replied, "You do now." And they did, amazingingly 'finding' the chairs that had previously been out of stock.

perhaps the worst delivery experience we have ever had - ordered a wardrobe and a couple of chests of drawers. Delivery day only half the order turned up, one box from each multi-box item - clear as day to me but the delivery men tried to argue the toss and said that everything was as it should be despite the boxes clearly saying 1 of 3 etc, they even tried to 'make it work' by changing the paperwork in front of me to say it was right! Eventually, after I had managed to convince them that writing a number on an invoice in pen in front of the customer does not make an order miraculously correct the delivery men contacted the office and said a truck would come with the missing boxes later that day - sat in waiting, didn't happen.
Contacted Ikea and delivery company, both said it is the fault of the other one. Backwards and forward multiple times until Ikea said they would send out replacements but they couldn't just replace the missing boxes, we would have to have complete new sets of everything and the original boxes would have to be returned.
OK we said, and waited in on the relevant date - no delivery.
Contacted Ikea again, was told the whole order had been cancelled for some reason but they would reinstate it and deliver yet another day - sat in and waited, finally turned up but they wouldn't take the old boxes, we had to wait in another day for them to pick them up.

Will never use Ikea for delivery again, absolute shower from start to finish.

I can remember the good old days when Ikea didn’t deliver.  People hired a van for a day and got the right items home the same day 😺

I think that's why IKEA are sometimes a bit glitchy when it comes to deliveries. Their business model was very much orientated towards not delivering and I don't think they've ever really caught up with themselves.
