Faulty goods from the supermarket, supermarket say go see the manufacturer.

Curious whether this is legit actually. I guess it must be because you'd expect them to get it right but I also suspect people here will know more about it than the supermarket so here I am.
Basically I bought a multipack of 7up cans from the supermarket. I've had a few out & when I went to get another I noticed how light it is.
I weighed the cans as well as some Coke cans I have. The full cans all weighed within a couple grams of each other whereas this light can is less than half the weight.
The ring pull is still intact. There's a slight dent in the bottom of the can but there's nothing seemingly leaking through so no holes. It's just damn near empty.
So I thought I'd contact the supermarket via Twitter expecting them to say bring it in with your receipt & we'll sort you an exchange.
Nope, they said because they don't make the product themselves I'm to get in touch with the manufacturer.
They did give me some Nectar points to cover the purchase so in a roundabout way I got a refund. I just didn't expect to be sent on to the manufacturer.
I know some wouldn't bother about it. It's only a can right. But I've paid for X amount & only got Y and if I didn't contact them on Twitter I'd have only been scrolling on YouTube instead so there we are.

I've been given this type of runaround from a retailer myself (not a supermarket). Basically they gave you duff information, to get a refund you take it back to where you bought it from. Especially something relatively cheap like some cans of 7Up.
Since they've already given you Nectar points I guess you're happy that this is concluded. If you take the cans back to store you might also get a refund though.0 -
Two separate issues here:
1. Your civil rights under the Consumer Rights Act. You were sold ‘faulty’ goods. Your contract was with the retailer not the manufacturer, so the retailer should be refunding you. Actual money not nectar points (unless you paid with points).
2. Criminal offence under the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regs. The packer of the cans has to ensure that they don’t give you short measure (subject to the tolerances laid out in the regs). Slightly complicated in this case because it’s a multipack, but an empty can will still likely give rise to an offence.1 -
I should think if you take it back to the supermarket customer service desk with your receipt they'll reimburse or replace it.0

This is the supermarket's problem not the retailer's manufacturer's. [Edited and corrected thanks to Alderbank]
Ideally you'd bring all the cans back to customer services at the supermarket you bought from to get a full refund.
Obviously you would have had to check all the cans first before opening them to do this.
You could try just bringing the underweight can back to see if you can get some kind of partial refund. (If you ask very nicely and smile you might get lucky and they'll give you a full refund rather than faff around trying to pro rata it)1 -

Thanks to the rest of you.1 -
If you contact the manufacturer there is every possibility they will send you a voucher for a whole multipack. I had similar with some crisps and did exactly that.0

My husband broke a tooth while eating a packet of crisps. He wrote to the manufacturer sending them the offending hard crisp.
After investigation they advised that there had been a machine fault and the hard piece was solid potato. They paid for private dental treatment to repair the tooth.
I don’t think Tesco would have done that..
Missing chocolate on some biscuits resulted in a few free packets of biscuits.0
