Cash Converters

To try and cut along story short.
I bought my child who lives with their Mum an xbox one S a few years ago. Recently I found out it was supposed to of been thrown out after water came in contact with it and stopped working. My Ex and partner have a habit of pawning things into cashies. Does anyone know if I can find out if they done this with the Xbox I've got a note of the serial number. I know the Xbox is gone for good and wouldn't want to involve the police. Just need to put my mind at ease to draw a line under it.

Cash Converters say on the website they test stuff before they buy it, so if it didn't come on and was deader than a dodo, they may not have taken it.  But for all you know it may be being used as a doorstop somewhere.

Unlikely due to GDPR you'd be able to find out if your console ended up at this sort of establishment.

Im a little confused - are you worried that:

    a) your childs mum has sold a perfectly good XBox and just lied that it was broken
    b) your childs mum has sold a dud XBox
  • I'm sure the Xbox wasn't damaged and she pawned it. Then lied  to my daughter it was damaged

I think you have got to let this one go. You presumably have no actual proof to back up that suspicion?

I assume there is no way of getting an XBox that has been stolen blocked (like you can with a phone)? If it is still in use and online I imagine it could be traced from its serial number. However that would need significant law enforcement resources which I can't see happening unless there was a connection to some very serious crime.
  • Be no way of tracing it don't want it back I just want to know if it had been handed in to shop if I supplied the serial. Just want to prove a point if I can.

I can think of another possibility that you may want to consider.
Children do 'swap' things with other children, maybe the child is simply embarassed to tell you that they have swapped your gift for something else - and mum is covering for them by saying that it got damaged.
  • Hi Newcad I get what your saying but the ex wife and her partner have a have a habit of pawning in high value goods phones tvs laptops consoles bikes. My kido loved her xbox and knows the values of things.

    Bit of a conundrum then.
Do you stop giving your daughter things of value, or continue to do so acknowledging that they may then be sold for cash?
It's an awkward decision, but in the end its only you who can decide on what you accept or not.
The same question could easily have been asked about, say, a gold necklace rather than an Xbox
I'd say it's more of a family issue than a techie one.

Unless there's a hole in a Microsoft database somewhere, I don't think there's any way to know if a particular Xbox is still in use.
Your child might be able to log on to their MS / Xbox account and see if they're still logged in / connected to the missing device? If its been sold on, the new owner will (should) have wiped any existing accounts.
I've just logged in to my MS account and I can see the two laptops that I'm connected to. I don't have a live connection to an Xbox but if I did, I'd exect it to appear there.
