Buying a label on ebay

Just sold item on ebay where buyer pays postage (RoyalMail) and was a bit confused when going to print label.
Had to put size of parcel and weight etc and then "buy" the label on ebay before I could print it.

I know this is probably a stupid question as when i looked at what the buyer had paid  (plus postage) then that would be correct that I then have to pay for label on ebay but it just didn't  feel right.

I have only had one sale previous to this since the new rules about sd came in and don't  remember actually buying a label for that sale.  I thought I had just printed it.

Sorry if this is really a stupid post but I just felt uneasy and got totally  confused by it and wanted confirmation I suppose, that I had done the right thing.

If you had to buy a label then this doesn’t sound lime simple delivery , was it a large letter by any chance?

With simple delivery the label is provided and seller just prints it or uses the QR code, they don’t have to buy it or give sizes and weights.

It was a "small" parcel 1-2kg RM.  My shipping is set to use RM for simple delivery.

I think this must be why I got confused as the first sale  (I remembered just printing the label ) must have been simple delivery and it seems this latest sale wasn't.

Where does it tell you if it is simple delivery or not?

If its of any consequence, the item I sold was a small job lot of some baby items.

Was it buyer pays or seller pays?

Either way simple delivery looks different to custom postage . @Moonpenny after the sale it is easy to spot- simple delivery just send you a label that you can either print or use a QR code for, you don't do anything else. Custom postage requires you to choose the postage type, ie RM , Evri or whatever and shows the amount each costs and then charges you for that label.

Soolin, I think I got confused as the sale was something I had listed some time ago when I had set my own custom postage and this got carried forward.
My first sale i mentioned was SD and i just assumed this one was the same and forgot it wasn't SD.

I think half the confusion is that there shouldn’t be any custom postage items left, but eBay have slipped their time frames so often there is still the odd item that sells with custom postage. I had one myself recently, caught me quite unawares.

I've not seen any listings automatically changed to simple delivery although when listing a similar item (under £10) simple delivery is the only option, and if I revise a listing it only offers simple delivery. This happened when I found I had more of something than I'd originally listed.

It was supposed to happen months ago but the whole roll out has just failed to meet any targets at all. A lot of mine went to SD on one account but with the postage over assessed  LLs going as small parcels, and small parcels as medium parcels. Another account barely had any change automatically but I did them myself for parcels as SD work well for me. I have missed the occasional one- which is why I was surprised to get a parcel with custom postage the other week.
