Removing cat fleas

My two cats were crawling with fleas and expensive vet approved chemical spot on insecticide has no effect. I had an old nit comb from years ago, and tried it on the cats, and hey presto it caught adult fleas straight away. I put them in a bowl of hot water to kill them. Much better and effective method. Both cats enjoy being combed so it's not a problem.
So happy to have discovered this hack

I used to hold my cats over a sink with one hand under their front legs and comb them there.  I'd have the hot water tap running to rinse the flea comb.  This works well as if there are any flea eggs they are more likely to fall off and into the sink and down the drain.

The problem is that fleas come back and they've likely dropped eggs on the carpet, bed, sofa.  When I needed to put one in a cattery they told me to get a specific tablet (sorry name escapes me) from the vet.  As I recall it was about £20 for one tab but you only needed one every 6 months.  Any fleas that bit the cat would die as would their eggs and it was also work on the ones that might have already been dropped supposedly. Since then we never had fleas in the house whereas previously we were all being eaten alive!

Just noticed this is on the family forum - I'll move it to the pets one.

For egged could be in the furnishings , along skirting boards, in clothes. Anywhere the cats have been. The fleas may their eggs in a dark place like under cushions.

You need to hoover thoroughly everywhere. The eggs can lay dormant for up to 9 months.

You can buy household sprays which can last for 6-9 months.

If your cat goes outside they can  get reinfected by visiting  places where fleas are.
