MSE won't accept my address or tariff!

As above, MSE does *not* offer to let me enter my correct address!  It shows a sequence of 26, 'a named house', 30 - but we are number 28 which is not shown!
Then it offers me Octopus tariffs excluding both Cosy and IOG which have been going for years - and insists on putting me on 'flexible' which is totally wrong.  So I cannot expect it to suggest suitable switches.  Why does MSE not update it database?

I'm not sure if they read the forums.

I'm waiting for a reply from them too. I guess they're busy at the moment what with the price cap announcement and all these new tariffs coming and going.
  • For what it's worth, I've just been through the same.  The response was that the tool uses the 'electricity industry database' of addresses - so I need to check how my property is listed there.  Which doesn't really make sense, as it's a postcode lookup, and my home isn't going to be listed under a different postcode.

Anyhow I did check with the supplier how it is registered (it was as per the bill) - so came to a dead end.
I ended up with USwitch who do have a decent database.

To be fair I did get a pretty swift response to my emails.  It was just that they were a bit "computer says no".

    Same problem some years ago.
My house could not be found on the National Database for a while. Turns out it was not registered as "101 Sesame Street"** KA9  2GO but by my house name "Dundundun Roaming"**.
Has your house ever had a name address?

edit.(P.S. I obtained accurate quotations by using my neighbours address in the same postcode then sorted final contract details on the phone.. Things probably more complicated now though since everything has been 'simplified' to online box ticking)

Yes - both a name and a number - but neither show against the postcode when I put it into the "Find my address" box.  The name hasn't changed for 200+ years, so "Chez Nous" hasn't morphed into "Llamedos" or anything like that...

I tried the same with a neighbouring house (which incidentally tells me which tariff they are on, and their energy consumption over the last year!), but then if I try to "Change my address" to the correct one I'm hit with the same issue.

Luckily USwitch seem to use the correct meter MPAN database, so rather than try and push water uphill with the MSE comparison site I've taken the easier path.

Does it appear correctly on Royal Mails database?  You can check here - https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode.  I don't know if the 'electricity industry database' gets their data from there or not?

  • Yes, all correct there.  I've never had an issue with any other postcode look-up over the last 16 years - it's only the MSE comparison site which is a problem.

From the OP's and grimsalve's experience it looks as though it's not a problem that's unique to my address.  Since  they don't want to know they have a problem, I'll just let them continue to miss out on referral commission and shop elsewhere.
