Tips needed on insuring a replacement car

I'm looking around to buy a car but one thing I'm faced with is excessive insurance costs at the point at which I want to buy the car. I have full NCD and never had an accident, but right now do not own a vehicle (I'm a named driver for my wife's car, though).

The problem I'm faced with is the need to insure a car at the point at which I buy it. For example; a Nissan Leaf quoted using Churchill on the basis that I haven't yet bought the car and the policy is due to start three weeks hence is £520. The same quote but with a start date of today is £760.

Previously when buying a used car I'd pay for it, transfer ownership and tax/insure it and drive it away - this has never been a problem before and I've never encountered this kind of escalation.

Does anyone have any tips to get a sensible price in this situation?

Buying last minute is normally a distress purchase and prices are often higher, contrary to popular belief this applies to a lot of things and turning up at the airport passport in hand to go to whatever flight is going is not the bargain holiday people seem to think it is... your more likely a business person on a last minute trip so its not your money or someone off to see a dying relative or such in which case you'll pay whatever.

You could look at a short term policy to give you space, or ask the dealer to keep the car for the 3 weeks or look at a policy with low cancellation fees to then rebuy after but other than option B you may find the others more than simply shopping around and getting the best price you can on a last minute basis
