Should I pursue this refund?

Hi all,
my friend and I booked and paid online in July for a spa break of three nights Sept 1-4. Then her sister asked to join us, so we upgraded to a triple room on Aug 7th at a further cost of £493.
Unfortunately, my friend who is a cancer survivor was given a last-minute oncology appointment bang in the middle of our spa break and her sister won’t go without her.
I telephone the spa hotel on Aug 15th and they agreed to give us a 6-month voucher for the total cost, but I want to get the £493 back as the sister cannot join us within the voucher expiry time frame of six months.
As the upgrade was an additional booking, is there anyway I can pursue for this refund under consumer rights? The hotel are refusing to refund me.
Thanks in advance!

Unless there's something in the contract that allows you to terminate for convenience or special circumstances such as this, take the voucher and leave it at what they are offering might be better than what you are contractually entitled to, which is most likely nothing, especially since you are close to the spa date (unless you can prove they were able to re-book within this time in which case you could potentially pursue a full refund based on double recovery).

Sorry but although the circumstances might be ones where some businesses would extend a gesture of goodwill they don't give you any additional rights.

It is possible that the voucher is already a gesture of goodwill, rather than an entitlement?
