holiday insurance

I have booked a package holiday for 2026.  Just wanted to check about travel insurance as when I went to get online quotes as I am waiting for an outpatient appointment (which could be months yet) to see cardiology I can not get a quote.

Now I have other pre exisiting medical conditions and would never think of going away without travel insurance but not sure what to do for best.

Should I wait as hoping my appointment should be well before my holiday and therefore be in a better position to get insurance sorted or should I take it out now and inform company and then let them know the outcome.

I am really not sure what to do for best or how it all works.  hope someone can help

Insurers don’t like uncertainty so your difficulty is because you’re awaiting tests without a formal diagnosis.
Once you’ve got a label and they know what they’re dealing with you should be able to get cover.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

How would you take out insurance now if you can't get a quote - are you meaning that you'd do so by failing to declare a known medical situation?

no I did not mean that.  This is one of the reason I am asking for advice.  Everyone says take out insurance when you book a holiday and I can not do it pending investigation so was wanting to see if it is possible to declare pending investigation but still have some cover that excluded this medical condition and to update company.

thanks to elsien I now know what to do

The problem having a holiday booked but no cover in place would be (God forbid) if you have an accident or incident preventing you from travelling before your diagnosis is known.
That's why advice to have insurance in place from the time you make a reservation is sound.

Ah right, I see what you mean now - it wasn't clear to me that what you had in mind was to get a new quote specifically excluding cover for a potential condition.  Obviously you need to discuss the situation with one or more insurance companies (or brokers) but in general, yes, it makes sense to obtain cover asap in case of needing to cancel for a variety of other reasons, unless the costs of doing so outweigh the benefits, i.e. if the cost of such cover exceeded your potential losses if needing to cancel, etc.

Some insurers may be willing to provide cover but exclude anything associated with heart conditions.  You would need to phone each company to find out.

We don’t always take out cover straight away as it depends on how much we would be liable to lose. Usually it is only the deposit until nearer the time and sometimes this isn’t much more than the excess would be anyway! We currently have a trip booked but my son has a couple of routine hospital appointments coming up soon so we will wait until he has the results (we have to declare the conditions anyway but at least he won’t be waiting for consultations!).We would always ensure cover is in place well before final payments are due or if the deposit is quite large though
