FWIW, our house was a new build in 1987, and was built with polystyrene bead insulation from new and has been perfect in all respects.
Nothing inherently wrong with them as an insulation method if designed for it.
My last bungalow build in the late 60's  had beads insulation in 2010,  in the 13 years I was there not a sign of any damp anywhere. My current 70's bungalow also has them don't know when installed but also not a sign of damp anywhere.
