UPS asking for more duty

I recently had a delivery from Europe. On the doorstep the UPS driver asked me for £50.73 for duty, I wasn't expecting that, but he said he wasn't allowed to leave the delivery without taking payment. So I paid.
A couple of days later I received an invoice from UPS confirming I had paid. I also have the receipt on my bank statement from UPS.
UPS have just sent through another invoice stating that I still owe the same value.
I've called them up and got nowhere. They couldn't seem to understand that I had already paid and had evidence of the payment. I was passed to two different departments, Payment and Invoicing. Invoicing told me I had to speak to Payments and vice versa.
Anyone else had anything similar happen, and managed to deal with it?

I would write to them and tell them its paid, enclosing proof of payment and invoice. Tell them you consider the matter closed, UPS always charge Duty on imports, for Temu and the like.

Billed for importation costs? All the time

Billed on the doorstep? Never. Plenty of times had letters or emails before the goods arrived and likewise after goods have been delivered but never by the courier on the door. Friendly with our local UPS courier so maybe would trust them but personally would be worried by a random courier demanding payment there and then. The fact you subsequently got a receipt posted suggests it was legitimate but anyone can get the facilities to take payments by card in under 10 minutes so would be an easy scam to pull.

I have, ordered a motorcycle exhaust from Poland, paid on the doorstep as I should have paid before then, its likely the customer hasnt noticed or missed the request for the duty from UPS

I bought my first proper turntable from Germany and they made a big but apologetic thing about having to pay for the goods in advance and not being able to pay for it by paying the courier in cash. Had to really push that it wasnt a problem and that cash on delivery just isnt an option from retailers in the UK so used to paying by card in advanced... I would have been equally concerned if the courier had asked me for €750 in cash

It's a fairly convoluted scam though, isn't it?

You don't just need a card reader, you need a UPS uniform, a UPS van (they use the American-style vans over here as well so they're not a bog standard Transit or anything) sprayed in UPS livery, and you need to have a customer who is naive enough to accept a random parcel and then pay the duty on the door for something they weren't expecting.

And you then need to cross your fingers that the recipient doesn't report the fraud and it gets charged back.

There are definitely easier ways to scam people. You'd probably have more luck with a 419 scam.

How many people know what uniform or type of van UPS use.?

Do they even look to see what they are wearing?  None of the couriers who deliver to me wear a uniform so it wouldn’t occur to me  look  for an inform.

Do they look at the van? Is it parked at their door or somewhere along the road?

Scans catch people off guard and they act without thinking.
